SHE HEARD SAM GET UP IN THE MORNING AND WENT OVER TO THE WINDOW. Outside, the ground was not wet. There was no trace of nighttime ever having been there. Sam let his dogs out, then later walked himself down between the stands of junk. Them dogs . . . them dogs. Them dogs.

C woke up and looked to the window. He slipped from the bed and put his arm around her. He could see Sam walking toward his car.

“He’s going to the woods,” said Cell.

“I know,” said C. “He shouldn’t go. We need him here.”

“No, we don’t. We don’t need him. We don’t need him or his dogs—anything. We need peace. There is nothing peaceful in this house.”

C tried to go back to sleep.
